Bay Area residents Ritch Viola and Liza Rachetto put together a pair of very impressive performances at the Ironman World Championships held on October 14th in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The race consisted of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run and saw athletes from around the world compete for world titles and the opportunity to be called an “Ironman” at triathlons biggest event of the year.
Viola, of Tiburon, competed in the men’s 45-49 age group and completed the grueling course in a time of 9 hours, 20 minutes and 55 seconds. His finish, just over 2 minutes behind the age group winner, earned him a second place spot on the podium at the world championship event.
Rachetto, from Los Alto, was equally impressive. She finished the course in a time of 10 hours, 8 minutes and 56 seconds, earning her a third place podium spot in the women’s 40-44 age group.
